An AI grocery list your agent writes in your notes
Updated
An AI grocery list is one of the few AI ideas that saves time the first week. You say what you are cooking, and your agent turns it into a checklist. The trick is where that list ends up. If it lands in your notes, it is on your phone when you reach the shop, and it is still there when you think of something on Wednesday.
From dinner plans to a list
Start the way you would talk to someone at home.
You ask: "We are making tacos and pasta this week, and I need breakfast stuff. Make a grocery list note, grouped by where things are in the shop."
The note it writes, called Groceries:
- Fruit and veg: onions, garlic, tomatoes, lettuce, limes, bananas
- Meat and fish: minced beef
- Dairy: grated cheese, sour cream, milk, yoghurt
- Dry goods: taco shells, spaghetti, tinned tomatoes, oats
- Bakery: bread
In the note, each group is a bold heading with a checklist line for every item under it. You see a normal list with boxes to tick. No symbols, no markup, nothing to tidy up.
Grouping by aisle is a small thing that matters in the shop. You walk the store once instead of zigzagging back for the limes. If your shop is laid out differently, put that in the first line of the note: "dairy last, it is at the back". The agent reads the note before it writes, so the rule is there every time.
Add to the same note all week
The first list is the easy part. The useful part is Wednesday evening, when you notice you are out of coffee.
You ask: "Add coffee and dish soap to the grocery list."
The agent reads the Groceries note, adds coffee under Dry goods, and adds a Household heading for the dish soap. It changes the note you already have. It does not start a second list, which is the whole point. One list, always in the same place.
A good habit is to say it plainly when you ask: "add it to the grocery list note, do not make a new one." An agent that can read your notes checks what is already there before it writes.
Tick things off in the shop
In the shop you open the note on your phone and tick items as they go in the basket. That part needs no agent at all. It is just a checklist in a simple notes app, which is exactly what you want when you are holding a basket in one hand.
One thing to know: notes belong to one account. There is no sharing a list with another person's account.
After the shop
You ask: "Clear the ticked items from the grocery list, but keep what I did not buy."
The agent rewrites the note with only the unticked lines left. The yoghurt you forgot stays on for next time.
Reuse the staples
Most weeks start with the same ten things. Keep them in their own note.
You ask: "Make a note called Staples with what we buy every week."
- Milk
- Bread
- Bananas
- Eggs
- Coffee
From then on: "Start this week's grocery list from Staples, then add what we need for fish tacos and a lentil soup." The agent reads both notes and writes one list. When your staples change, you edit the Staples note yourself or ask the agent to.
Search for last week
Old lists are not useless. If you archive the note each week instead of clearing it, you can search your notes for "grocery" and see what you bought before a birthday party or a holiday. The agent can read those archived notes too: "Look at the grocery list from the week of the party and make a similar one."
What the agent does not do
- It does not shop. It writes the list. You still go to the store or place the order yourself.
- It does not know your fridge. Tell it what you already have, or it will add it again.
- It does not know prices or stock. A grocery list is a plan, not a receipt.
- It is not an allergy check. If someone at home has allergies, read labels and decide yourself.
Connect your agent once
To make an AI grocery list land in your notes, your agent needs access to
them. In Claude that is a connector: open Customize, then Connectors, press
the plus button, choose Add custom connector, paste
https://verysimplenotes.com/mcp, press Add, then Connect and sign
in. The step by step guide is
Claude connectors for your notes.
If you plan the meals first, the next step is an
AI meal planner that keeps the plan in your notes.
Very Simple Notes is a simple notes app with checklists, bold headings and lists, synced with Apple or Google sign-in, and a connector so your agent can write the list for you. It costs $0.99 a month, and the first month is free.
