An AI workout planner that updates the same note
Updated
An AI workout planner is easy to start and easy to abandon. You ask for a programme, you get a nice plan in a chat, and three weeks later you cannot find it. Put the plan in a note instead, log what you did in the same note, and let your agent adjust it from there. The note becomes the programme and the diary at once.
One note per programme
You ask: "I want to run three times a week and do some strength at home twice. I have about thirty minutes. Make a note called Autumn training with a plan for the first week."
The note it writes:
- Monday: easy run, 20 minutes, walk breaks when needed
- Tuesday: strength at home: squats, push-ups, plank, three rounds
- Thursday: easy run, 20 minutes
- Friday: strength at home, same as Tuesday
- Sunday: longer easy run, 30 minutes
Keep one note per programme. When the programme ends, archive it. Archived notes are out of the way but still searchable, so you can look back at what you did last spring.
Log what you did in the same note
A plan is only half the story. The other half is what actually happened. Add a short log under the plan, in your own words, right after the session. Tap the note on your phone and type a line, or tell the agent.
You ask: "Log today in Autumn training: ran 20 minutes, felt fine, left knee a bit stiff at the end."
The log section in the note grows:
- Mon: ran 20 minutes, felt fine, left knee a bit stiff
- Tue: strength, only two rounds, short on time
- Thu: skipped, late at work
The agent adds each line to the note you already have. It does not start a new note for every workout, which is how training apps end up with a hundred entries and no overview.
Adjust next week from the note
At the end of the week, the note holds both the plan and the log. That is exactly what a sensible adjustment needs.
You ask: "Read Autumn training and write next week's plan under this week. Keep it realistic based on what I actually managed."
The agent reads the log, sees a skipped Thursday and two rounds instead of three, and writes a week two that is similar rather than harder. It edits the same note. You end up with week one, the log, and week two in one place, in order.
This is where an AI workout planner earns its keep. Not by inventing a perfect programme, but by keeping the plan honest with what you really did.
Small habits that keep it going
- Log in one line. What you did and how it felt. Nobody reads long diaries, including you.
- Be honest about skipped days. The plan can only adjust to what is written down.
- Star the current programme. Starred notes stay easy to find.
- Ask for less, not more. "Keep it at thirty minutes" is an instruction the agent can follow every week.
A plan is a starting point, not coaching
An agent can write a reasonable plan and adjust it to your log. It cannot see you move, it does not know your health, and it can be wrong. Treat every plan as a starting point.
- If something hurts, stop and rest. A note that says "knee stiff" is a reason to ask a professional, not for the agent to push through it.
- If you have a health condition, an injury, are pregnant or are starting after a long break, talk to a doctor or a physiotherapist first.
- If you want a programme built around a real goal, a qualified coach is the right person. The note is still a good place to keep what they give you.
When the programme ends
Ask the agent for a short summary at the top of the note: "Add three lines at the top of Autumn training saying what the programme was and how it went." Then archive the note. When you start again next season, the agent can read the old note first and build on it instead of starting from nothing.
Why a simple notes app works for this
Training apps want you to log in their format. A note lets you write what matters to you, in plain words, and still gives the agent enough to work with. A simple notes app has a numbered list for the plan, bullets for the log, and bold day names. That is all a programme needs.
Connect your agent once
In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, press the plus button, choose Add
custom connector, paste https://verysimplenotes.com/mcp, press
Add, then Connect and sign in. After that Claude can read and edit your
training note in any chat. The full walkthrough is in
Claude connectors for your notes.
Very Simple Notes is a simple notes app with lists and checklists and no visible markup, synced with Apple or Google sign-in, and a connector so your agent can keep your plan up to date. It costs $0.99 a month, and the first month is free.
