Can Claude read Apple Notes? The short answer is: sometimes. On a Mac, in the Claude desktop app, it can. In Claude on the web or on your phone, it cannot. If you want an assistant that reaches your notes wherever you are talking to it, that difference matters more than it first seems.
The desktop route
Claude's own tutorial on connecting tools describes desktop extensions as working with apps and files on your computer, "like your notes, messages, and code files". It gives the example that Claude can read your Apple Notes on desktop. The same tutorial marks desktop extensions as app only.
In practice that means the route to Apple Notes runs through your computer. Your notes sit in the Notes app on your Mac, and a desktop extension lets the Claude desktop app reach them there. You will also find several community projects that do the same thing in different ways. Check who made an extension before you install it, since it will be able to see every note on that computer.
Where it stops
- Only in the desktop app. Desktop extensions are app only. Claude on the web does not have them.
- Only on the computer. Open Claude on your phone on the bus and your Apple Notes are out of reach, even though the Notes app is right there on the same phone.
- All or nothing. Apple Notes holds everything: shopping lists, but also passwords people should not keep in notes, medical details, diary entries. A desktop route to your notes usually sees all of it.
None of this is a flaw in Claude or in Apple Notes. Apple Notes was built as a notes app for Apple devices, not as a place an assistant connects to from anywhere. It simply was not designed for that job.
What you actually want from notes and Claude
Most people asking whether Claude can read Apple Notes want something quite specific. They want to say "put this on my shopping list" to Claude, in whatever window they have open, and find it on their phone later. Or they want Claude to read the training plan they keep and adjust it. For that you need three things:
- Reachable from every Claude. Web, desktop and phone, not just one computer.
- Read and write. Claude should be able to update a note, not just quote it.
- Only the notes you choose to share. The notes you work on with Claude, not your whole private archive.
Why not just paste notes into the chat?
You can, and for a one-off question it is fine. Copy a note, paste it, ask. The trouble starts when the note changes. Claude suggests an updated list, and now you have to copy the result back into Apple Notes by hand, on the right device, before you forget. Next week you paste the old version again by mistake. The real question behind "can Claude read Apple Notes" is whether Claude can keep a note up to date with you. Pasting does not get you there.
The simpler alternative
Keep the notes you want Claude to see in a simple notes app that Claude can reach through a connector. A connector lives in your Claude account rather than on one computer, so the same connection works in Claude on the web, on desktop and on your phone. This does not mean leaving Apple Notes. Plenty of people keep both. Apple Notes stays the private drawer for everything. The shared notes, the ones you and Claude both work on, live in a second place built for that: shopping lists, recipes, plans, packing lists, reading lists.
Moving the notes that matter
You do not need a migration. Pick the handful of notes you actually want Claude to use and move them over. Often the fastest way is to let Claude do the typing:
- Paste the text of an Apple Note into a chat and say "save this as a note called Weekly shopping, as a checklist".
- Ask "turn this messy list into a clean note with sections".
- From then on, ask Claude to update that note instead of pasting it again.
After a week or two you will know which notes you share with Claude and which stay private. That split is healthy.
What stays private
